The new PMI website is still being developed, so we are getting started with a provisional one.
The Cluster of Excellence PMI follows on from the Cluster of Excellence Inflammation at Interfaces. In the past ten years, the Cluster in Kiel and Lübeck, together with partner institutions in Plön and Borstel, has built up unique structures in research and healthcare, and permanently changed Schleswig-Holstein as a biomedical location. The precision medicine in chronic inflammation concept is tied in with this. The goal is to make progress with early diagnosis and preventive intervention, as well as to improve treatment.
The interdisciplinary aspect of the multifaceted research approach should now be transferred more into healthcare. Researchers from basic science and the hospitals are collaborating closely to do so. The PMI Cluster particularly supports researching clinicians. They can take urgent clinical questions into the laboratory for investigation and identify the clinical potential of fundamental discoveries. Patients can take part in clinical studies and so have access to new treatments and diagnostic options.
The PMI Cluster’s research focuses primarily on chronic inflammatory diseases of the barrier organs. These include chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (mainly Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis), inflammatory skin diseases (psoriasis, neurodermatitis), inflammatory rheumatic diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, ankylosing spondylitis) and lung diseases (asthma, chronic bronchitis) as well as brain diseases (such as Parkinson’s disease).
